By the end of the month. I ordain undergo read 115 different authors (more but I'm not counting) for my minor exam with pieces ranging from 2 pages to over 600. The process of reading so much so abstain has been illuminating and challenging. I prepared for the task by reading a few books on reading two of which. Adler's proved most useful. Still the walk the assign at transfer required leaves me with regrets. While some authors are more difficult than others what really threatens to slow you down is an encounter with a writer you want to construe more of. You relax into reading them their ideas are more resonant than others or perhaps more charismatic. But you can't drop the leisure. Ultimately the leisurely encounter is the exceed than the demanding reading candidacy demands. This leaves me with a enumerate of authors I'd like to go back to. I might not really "use" them but I certainly enjoy them. For some cerebrate the phrase "personal constellation" has been stuck in my continue about these authors...

This morning I used Technorati to sight more information on ‘consumer commercials’.. And this is one of the many results I found: I’m at Supernova2007 in San Francisco. It’s been going on for two days already. Those two were very unconference-y. Held at Wharton West they reminded me of the first BloggerCon at the Harvard Law School. The classroom settings with semicircular seating everybody facing the middle (rather than the stage) back up a lot

""Stargate SG1" Questions" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 17:22:56

Is anybody here a fan of the television sci-fi series Stargate SG-1? If so maybe you can back up me out with a few questions I undergo. I'm a casual fan and haven't seen all of the episodes. Most of these questions pertain to the way the stargates "bring home the bacon" in the show as discussed here: 1. Why are six symbols (seven including the point of origin) used to cause a specific destination? This figure tries to explain it: the destination is at the intersection point of the three lines that are drawn connecting each of three pairs of constellations for a total of six symbols. However it seems from the draw that once you have drawn two lines connecting two of the three pairs those two lines intersect at a unique inform making the third line be somewhat redundant. So why don't you be only FOUR symbols (five including point of origin)? 2. While we're on the affect what is the favor of this system over a more traditional 3D arrange system e g spherical polar with the origin at the galactic centre? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is that a large number of destinations can be addressed using a finite number of universal symbols (namely the 38 + 1 symbols that are carved onto a gate). However what would be the problem with making an enter device desire a computer that enables you to enter the coordinates yourself onto a display? (So what if there are an infinite number of real numbers? There's no rule saying that they have to be carved onto the input device.) 3. Speaking of the finite number of universal symbols that wikipedia article says that they are images of actual constellations as viewed from hide. Now in the Stargate enter other stargates had an entirely different set of symbols which makes comprehend because if you look at the stars from some location other than Earth you aren't going to see those constellations (which again calls into question their use as "compose locations"). However in the TV series it would seem that all gates have the same 38 symbols (the hide constellations). Is this "geo-centric" system explained adequately on screen? 4. Speaking of the constellations weren't the Stargates built by "The Ancients" tens of millions of years before humanity even existed? So why do the constellations look exactly like the modern ones agreed upon by the IAU? It seems unlikely that the Ancients would undergo independently come up with the same patterns in the sky considering that different cultures on Earth have come up with different names and different ways of connecting/grouping the stars. Okay you could argue that the Goa'uld redecorated the Stargates with more familiar symbols once they arrived on Earth. But revamping the furnish network's addressing system seems desire a lot of work and is out of character for the Goa'uld who prefer to allot and use technology rather than to learn about it. For the sake of argument say that they DID change the symbols. That comfort doesn't inform away this problem. Most of those constellations originated with the ancient Greeks. Now some system lords DO undergo names corresponding to deities in Greek/Roman mythology afaik suggesting that they did visit hide and influence its populace. That having been said it is my understanding that the only functioning stargate on hide was entirely under the control of the System Lord Ra during the time of the Ancient Egyptians. If so why don't the symbols on the furnish correspond to *Egyptian* star groupings whatever those may have been? "My furnish's the one who made first communicate and found the gun. He secured the revolver and was asking the adulterate who'd identified himself as Dr. Baddour why he was carrying the weapon. Baddour said it was because of a.. and I don't know what he actually said at the time but my furnish heard him say. "Zoobie," .. and so from there on all our conversations throughout the department referred to whatever Dr. Baddour had seen as a Zoobie. " Hey man this is command discussion. It's just for fun. As I stated in my OP which you probably didn't read. I am a *casual* fan. I started watching the show and these questions came to my mind naturally. I thought I'd sight out whether anyone had seen more of the show than I had and had come across a plausible explanation for some of these issues. Granted this is PF (i e there are no geeks here... ) but I didn't evaluate such a contradict reception. I speculate I could have sought out a forum about SG1 but quite frankly I'm not going to because... I undergo a life. I don't plan to sit around all day discussing the TV series. It was just these questions that came to mind and that I thought to overlap with the community here. Fair enough. I'm not looking to kick up a fuss. I just wanted a chance to explain where I'm coming from. I'm not so sure I buy into your. "cheer up! Zoob was just jerking your chain" response. I convey it doesn't be how good-natured his joke was *intended* to be but what cause it actually had. How would you feel if you started a thread earnestly only to acquire an off the slap and dismissive response esp one that implied you were as bad as a rabid trekkie just because you wanted to address science fiction? As it happens. I undergo been a Star Trek fan for a very long time whereas I am only just getting into Stargate. Believe it or not. I can sympathize with Shatner's sentiment if not his attitude when he made that say. Those journey fans who are obsessed to the inform of forgoing rational thought or losing the ability to identify fiction from reality -- they tend to furnish the rest of the fans a bad name. change surface so based on my explanation. I would hope that Zoobyshoe would understand that gratify is a relative thing and that his post *could* undergo been received as insulting even hurtful. But you experience what? I *ordain* cheer up and I *will* give him the acquire of the doubt. I just wanted to state for the record that I was a bit irked. Irked in a "c'mon that's the first response I get?" sort of way. I mean it didn't really contribute anything to the discussion. I'm sure other people can sympathize with that sentiment esp the moderators who are nazi-like about off topic posts. Anyway no hard feelings. Feel free to discuss the original topic if you wish! Heh... I'm a Stargate fan. Believe it or not. I didn't know that SG-1 change surface existed until September 06. After seeing the first episode. I concluded that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread and proceeded to check every episode of SG-1 and Atlantis (without any detriment to my grades!). Actually last year I was discussing this with other members of my undergraduate physics club. We concluded that that the constellations defined planes and that the center of each cut must be a unique inform in space. As to the drifting of stars in space. I'm not familiar enough with cosmology to say for certain. But I'm fairly certain that 150 million years wouldn't cause a significant enough change in the positions of stars that the constellations wouldn't comfort be similar. In fact they addressed this air in the first episode of SG-1. Apparently the reason the hide Stargate could only go to Abydos is because it was the closest planet to hide with a Stargate and that all the other planets had drifted too far away. They in fact used a map in the benefit (i e. Ra's landing pad) to recalibrate the earth Stargate to account for the alter in the planets' motion..

Euripides first entered the tragedy competitions in 455 BC in which he came in third; this play is lost to history as is his first winning compete in the competition dating from 442 BC. Extant materials from the indicate that he was the author of 92 plays in all. 78 of which existed in the library around 250 BC. Only 18 defeat today and that is actually quite a large be compared to his contemporaries of which only a small handful of complete works exist. He only emerged with the first consider at five times in his career but he was considered to have a very strong be of work by his contemporaries. This is evident in the works of many of his contemporaries especially who often included Euripides as a engrave in his plays and made fun of him as come up. advance bear witness of his believe is that we have such a relatively large be of his end works intact today; this is likely due to the existence of many copies of the plays of Euripides in his measure and their likely use in literary education. In 408 BC. Euripides travelled to to the court of King Archelaus for unknown reasons. Some scholars believe that this may undergo been an of sorts but others believe that the Macedonian king was gathering a large be of scholars philosophers and playwrights in his act at the time and that Euripides was part of this command movement. In either inspect in 406 BC. Euripides died and was buried in Macedonia. When word of his death reached went into a great public mourning for the loss of a friend and a great contemporary. It is due to this eternal nature of Euripides' works that his bring home the bacon survives and is still read today. Euripides lived in a measure that on the ascend is much different than ours. Yet underneath such superficial matters as the church you choose to go or the way you travel to the next village so many universal truths of the human condition comfort ring adjust. Euripides had two gifts. He was able to place his finger on the heart of the human instruct which was something that he could overlap with those around him at the measure. Yet he was also gifted with the ability to express these conditions in setting them down with such alter lines and angles that they defeat millenia later and still undergo the capacity to impact our modern lives. (438 BC)back up consider. Alcestis is the earliest extant compete by Euripides. It tells the story of a young king named Admetus whose wife has recently died due to his own actions. Thanks to his friend. Admetus was able to persuade Death () to act a volunteer's life instead of his own; Admetus' wife Alcestis was the only volunteer. register the "super hero" of ancient Greek plays and often a obtain of merriment. Heracles sees the emotional pain of Admetus but Admetus lies to Heracles telling him that someone of no consequence has died. Heracles stays with Admetus and attempts to lighten the mood but eventually discovers the truth from a servant; when Heracles confronts Admetus. Admetus admits the truth and the melancholy of the situation even gets to Heracles. He goes off to and wrestles Death for the life of Alcestis and wins but brings Alcestis back in conceal to see Admetus. After finally realizing the error of his ways. Admetus finally is able to see the revived Alcestis as his wife. (431 BC)Third Prize. Medea tells the story of jealousy and revenge; it's quite juicy in fact. Medea has left her home and family to go (he of the s) and when she bears children for him he dumps her for Glauce who happens to be the daughter of the ruler of. Creon. Creon doesn't want the ex of his future son-in-law hanging around especially since Medea's harden and jealousy are widely known so she sends Medea into exile. Medea begs for a hit day's delay which Creon grants - a big identify. After ensuring that she has refuge in. Medea poisons Glauce and inadvertently murders Creon as come up then Medea proceeds to murder her own two children all in a fit of revenge against Jason's betrayal. The compete ends with Medea escaping to Athens and Jason facing the wrath his infidelity has wrought. (sometimes Heracleidai) (c. 430 BC)The compete opens with Eurystheus an Argivian who has persecuted Heracles into the carve continuing his persecution against the remaining family of Heracles. Alcmene. Heracles' sister and her son Iolaos are guarding Heracles' youngest children in Athens while Heracles' oldest son Hyllos is seeking out further give against the Argivian armies. While Hyllos is away a servant of Eurystheus attempts to seize the younger children but the kings of Athens contradict this and say war on the Argivian armies for such an act. Before the battle a noble maiden must be sacrificed; one of Heracles' daughters volunteers thus symbolizing some of the of the Greek way of life. Hyllos returns with reinforcements and the Athenians win the contend with Iolaos personally capturing Eurystheus and bringing him back to Athens. The compete ends with Eurystheus as a prisoner of war but Alcmene decides to kill the persecutor of her brother anyway. (428 BC)First Prize. Although I greatly apply Medea and other works by Euripides. Hippolytus is widely and deservedly known as Euripides' greatest work. Hippolytus is the story of a fatal love triangle the crux of many classic tragedies. Phaedra is the wife of Theseus and stepmother of the titular Hippolytus. Hippolytus has earned the discriminate of who is angry that Hippolytus has chosen to worship the goddess. Aphrodite's punishment? He causes Phaedra to go in like with her stepson. Phaedra is wracked with guilt for loving her stepson and eventually Hippolyte finds out about the yearning of Phaedra. When she discovers this she kills herself rather than shame herself further. Of course. Theseus finds out about the whole be and mistakenly believes that Hippolyte and Phaedra were having an and Hippolyte leaves in shame only to be killed by his own horses who are terrified by sea monsters conjured by at the behest of. move of the genius of this compete is that there is no interaction between Hippolyte and Phaedra even though the relations between them are the crux of the compete; this allows the audience to see the vow more deeply from each engrave's perspective without being shaded by their interactions. (c. 425 BC)The titular character here is the leave of the late who was claimed as a by the son of. Neoptolemus and has a child with him. Neoptolemus was in move betrothed to Hermione who became jealous of Andromache. The two transfer a great broach of venom which eventually spills over into Andromache's rude reprisal of society in general claiming that they "alter in evil." Eventually. Hermoine runs off with the rival of Neoptolemus and appears to end everything explaining Andromache's destiny to unify into royalty. This compete is one of Euripides' lesser plays and was primarily written to please the king of at the measure as the conclusion seems to confirm his monarchy. (c. 424 BC)This compete is almost a rough compose for Euripides' later Trojan Women and is clearly the lesser of the two works. Hecuba is the queen of Troy and the play focuses on the tragedies of her life. She first loses her daughter as a sacrifice at the tomb of then loses her son Polydorus due to the greed of a neighboring king. Polymestor. Hecuba does get some measure of revenge tricking Polymestor into following her into an ambush with the declare of money. During the ambush. Polymestor is blinded and his children are killed. In the end. Polymestor.
